Assuming you're a morning person, a smart way to lose weight is to work out before breakfast. That's because when you don't give your body carbs, more of the calories you burn will come from fat stores.

Stop eating just before you feel full. The reason: It takes your hypothalamus, which regulates feelings of satiety, time to catch up to your stomach.

To lose weight, drink cold water. Your body has to expend extra calories to heat up the H20 in your stomach, resulting in a rise in your resting metabolic rate. Researchers estimated that drinking two additional icy quarts a day would help you burn about 100 extra calories - or the equivalent of a pound of fat every five weeks.

For a better crunch, flex your tongue. Next time you're doing your sit-ups, tuck your chin in so you make a double chin, and gently press your tongue against the roof of your mouth. Contracting the muscles in the upper mouth can relax those at the back of the neck and reduce spinal discomfort.

Restless weight loss. A recent study at the Mayo Clinic found that people who are restless during the day - they fidget, pace, and walk around when they're on the phone - burn 350 more calories a day than people who tend to stay seated.

If you're going to indulge in a porterhouse, first pop a couple of C and E supplements and chase them with a glass of OJ. A recent study has shown that the high concentration of antioxidants in this healthful cocktail acts like Teflon for your arteries, keeping fatty deposits from sticking to arterial walls for up to four hours.

Lifting weights before you run helps you burn more flat. In fact, those who performed a weight-lifting routine and then hopped on a stationary bike burned twice as much fat as those who only pedaled. Resistance exercise stimulates the release of fat-burning hormones, which trigger your body to use more lard for energy.

People who cut their sodium intake live 7 years longer than those with a high intake.
Sodium causes your body to retain water, which increases blood volume and, consequently, blood pressure. This according to researchers at the University of Helsinki. The national average is over 4,000 milligrams (mg) a day - 1,600 mg more than is recommended.

If you get a muscle cramp, instantly put a stop to it by activating the muscle opposite. For example, try 10 abdominal contractions for a back spasm, or flex your quad 10 times if your hamstring seizes up.

Consider jalapeno peppers exonerated. A recent Stanford University study review shows that tobacco, alcohol, and body weight - not hot peppers and spicy food - are the main contributors to heartburn.

Make sure your stomach is a well oiled machine. A new Spanish study found that extra-virgin olive oil may prevent stomach ulcers. In a test-tube experiment, the Mediterranean staple destroyed the ulcer-causing bacterium Helicobacter pylori.
